Autumn mornings are another story. There's something painful about dragging ourselves from bed before the sun rises. We all need a little extra help to wake our sleepy bellies and eating something warm and cozy like this oatmeal does help to put all of us in a good mood for the day. (I must confess that I also need a few cups of really strong coffee to get myself going!)
What's your morning routine these days?
My Baba was big into a warm bowl of Cream of Wheat in the morning. Even though wheat is no longer part of my life, I still like a hearty bowl of warm grains. Baba always chopped up dates and tossed them into the bowl - this tradition I happily continue. The carmely dates add a nice chewy, sweet bite and I like to add a few other of my favorite goodies to the mix. Slices of ripe juicy pears, toasted hazelnuts, along with cream and maple syrup, transform a simple bowl of oats into a full meal packed with complex flavor, texture, nourishment, and comfort - a very good was to start the day.
Pears are ridiculously good this time of year and I'm eating them every which way I can. How about you?
INGREDIENTS {for 4 breakfasts}
printable recipe
- 2 cups Whole Grain Rolled Oats (GF folks: I always use Bob's Red Mill GF oats)
- 4 cups water
- pinch of sea salt
- 1 pear, thinly sliced
- 1 cup hazelnuts, toasted and skins removed
- 4 Medjool Dates, pits removed and chopped
- heavy cream to taste
- pure maple syrup to taste
Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a medium heavy bottomed sauce pan. When water is boiling, whisk in the oats and a pinch of salt. Reduce heat until you have a nice simmer. Continue cooking and stirring occasionally until oats are tender and cooked, this can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes.
Divide the hot cooked oats into 4 bowls. Top each bowl with: 1/4 pear, sliced; 1/4 cup hazelnuts; 1 chopped Medjool date.
Pass the syrup and cream around the table and let everyone add a splash or two of each so that every porridge is just right.
Deliciously healthy! Porridge is so versatile and tastes wonderful.

Oats for breakfast are absolutely a favorite at our house! I like mine with chopped dried apricots and toasted sesame seeds. :)

I can't stand getting up in the morning, it's ridiculous. But it's also cute, because our cat climbs under the comforter with us - - and how can you say no to that? :) The answer is, I can't.
ReplyDeleteI eat pretty bland malt o meal and instant ralston in the mornings, but I love it just the same. Sometimes I spice it up with goodies, but not always. Pears! Must make a note to pick up a few, I always forget about them.

You've inspired me to better my morning porridge! While still eating the same malt o meal and ralston, I've been jazzing it up recently with almonds, frozen blueberries, and dried cherries and raisins. A step in the right (yummy) direction:)

I love the idea of roasted hazelnuts and pears with porridge.
ReplyDeleteI haven't done it in ages but I love the Nourishing Traditions approach of soaking the oatmeal overnight in a bit of warm water with a tablespoon of yogurt or lemon juice. It cooks quickly and gives it a richness that is amazing.
I've also got a bag of too many overripe pears that I think I'm going to bake tonight. My mom always did it with brown sugar and butter, nestled into the hollows of the half-pears, but I've found that just a little butter is enough. Of course they require cream over the top to serve while still warm.

I have soaked the oatmeal overnight and was very surprised to find how it changed the taste a bit. So much smoother and richer. I used to put EVERYTHING in my oatmeal...and I mean everything, including fluffy marshmallow creme....even peanut butter. But now, I use coconut milk, fresh fruit, Stevia, and all kinds of nuts and berries. I love Oatmeal, it stays with me a lot longer than regular breakfast foods. Great picture.

It can be so hard to get out of bed when the house is cold in the morning. I love porridge, and we enjoy cream of wheat or Irish oats often during fall and winter. Your breakfast porridge looks like it would really warm a person all the way through.

Andreia, that is so rough. I remember working in NY years ago and getting to the office before the sun was really up and leaving the office after dark. It's pretty demoralizing not to get just a little sunshine.

This may be my favorite breakfast. I've been eating pears like crazy too, and the idea of adding toasted hazelnuts is brilliant. Steel cut oats are big here too.

My family would LOVE this. With the pears and dates and warm oats. 99% of the time all I can handle in the morning are several large cups of coffee :), but I'll have to make this for them sometime soon. lovely post - pears are divine right now. i absolutely love the combination of pears with almond butter - wonderful on toast or just as is. these days i've been getting out of bed slowly and waking up with south indian filter coffee and a slow pace (trying to stay unplugged- no computer or phone - until an hour after i'm up to savor the beauty of the morning).

I am so hooked on pears right now! Just picked up a large box from Trader Joe's and enjoying one every morning with my greek yogurt! So loving this morning treat you created. DeleteI really miss summer mornings and one of the few things that keeps me happy these colder mornings is a nice bowl of porridge. Some caramelized banana in it, a strong cup of tea and newspaper to go with it... Love the look and sound of this comforting porridge, can almost smell the autumn flavors in this dish!

Two of my favorite things: autumn and breakfast. My morning routine is a little wonky these days - i am usually a rise and shine early, a little work out, some breakfast, then down to business. I am trying to do morning pages now (a writing exercise) - we were housesitting for 6 months so I was walking dogs, my boyfriend sleeps later than me so sometimes not waking up early... I am excited to get back to it now and try this!

But I can't wait to get that fire roaring in the fire place, but I think it's going to have to wait a bit. :)

Unfortunately, I live in the UK and all I can do is read my books, Google and watch Youtube videos to substitute the dream I had of spending at least one fall in New England I am a qualified patissiƩre of too many years and love using natural ingredients. My kids lov my maple and pecan porridge cookies! Love your recipes!
